[Feeling a rush of wariness, he lifts his eyes up to the heavens and sees it. Just what it is, he doesn't know. It's got to be some variant of Red Eyes Black Dragon, hasn't it? But this thing... this huge, fierce, threatening creature... gives off an aura of pure danger. The ring is all but screaming at him to run.
He takes its advice, just barely clearing the area before a fireball hits the ground right where he was standing. The force of it leaves the ground cracked and smoking - and presents a worrying realization. If he takes shelter in any of these buildings, it'll just collapse them on top of him. There's no way he can fight this thing, and even if he binds it, it can still spit fire at him! It would be hilarious if it had happened to anyone but him.
[A fireball is pretty hard to miss, so she didn't end up turning the corner after all, in favor of spinning around to see what the hell happened - apparently what happened is she spoke of the devil and he appeared right away! But, even if it's sudden, she's not going to let him get fried. ...And she might have been a little disappointed about not fighting them, too. As he runs for her, she shouts.]
What happened to holding the fort!?
[Was he here because the barrier fell? Or something else? With no time to think about that, the only thing she can do is activate a war duel. Swinging her sword, she recites a chant that seems way too old for her. Such is life.]
Transmute unto me, O Deck Leader! I cast thy Perfect Rule oer these lands!
[As a rose symbol appears at her feet, the last swing of the sword seems to make the wind pick up in a quick sweep around the immediate area. Giant, humanoid eyeballs begin to appear on the ground and in the air behind Harriet - seconds later, magic circles that seem to be made of solid gold materialize in a wide radius around each one. They spin, furiously and methodically, like overworked gears. If she wanted to, she could change the landscape to be anything she liked. But she lets it be. Normal terrain is fine, even preferred when the enemy is a dragon.
Now that the war duel is set up, she calls her five cards and sets a defense card between them and the dark dragon. Mystical Elf's light-strengthening flip effect should give her the power to protect them... that is, unless this Red-Eyes' attack is greater than the usual. She hopes to god it's not.]
[Think of the devil and he comes running like a pussy right for her.]
Change of plans! You can yell at me later!
[He runs right past her, skidding to a halt there and staying behind her. It's cheap, using her as a human shield, but she's more capable of fighting this thing than he is right now. Well... at least he's getting to see her fight after all. Even if it does come with the risk of him being without a host or a bodyguard-slash-whatever-the-hell-they-were.
It's an impressive light show. He looks around with fascination at the giant eyeballs. It's just his kind of display... eyeballs, weird symbols, melodrama. He almost misses her actual move, he's too fascinated with the change in terrain.]
I knew there was something I liked about you!
[Besides her sense of humor and general good looks and fun nature.
The dragon's attack is painfully close, but all it hits is her defensive monster - and it seems her guess is right. Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon has the same attack as the regular Red-Eyes.]
Just imagine how many eyeballs there would be if Dark Sanctuary was involved! #aesthetic
[When the attack is repelled by the glowing elf now standing before them, Harriet's orange eyes dart around as she tries to figure out if anything else took defense damage. However unlikely it seems, there's still a possibility of one or more duelists being in on this. When nothing happens, she steels herself to just focus on the monsters, with a little annoyance. It's more brutal, but it's quicker to go after the leader... what's more, now that the circles are up, the other monsters in the area have eyes on her. She'll have to enlist her ally if she wants this to end quickly.]
If you have cards, play them. Under the perfect rule, I can only play one card per turn... though I don't need tributes as long as I have enough summoning power. The other monsters will be attacking us as soon as they-
[Get close, she is going to say. But actually, that Watapon was close. It lunges from her blind spot. The damage is barely a scratch on her armor, so Harriet just gives it an irritable glare as it growls and falls back to the ground - the dragon is more important to worry about. She briefly clears her throat before continuing.]
As I was saying, we'll have to fight them all. It's my turn! I activate Shield and Sword!
[The attack and defense of all the monsters jump around - with Mystical Elf's 2800 defense, this now makes her a deadly force.]
Battle, Mystical Elf! Attack that odd Red-Eyes!
[Hands clasped in prayer, it chants a spell - glowing runes appear in the air to batter the dragon, causing it to collapse. Its power should be absorbed into the circles.... but that doesn't happen. Instead, it turns into green light and appears to be sucked up into the sky. That was weird.]
Too many eyeballs! It'd make all the players self-conscious!
[His hand delves into his back pocket, tugging out the deck there. Even as he rifles through it, not bothering to play by the rules, he watches her move with an impressed manner. Turning such a weak monster into a fearsome enemy? Not bad at all.]
Not bad! I'm impressed, Harriet!
[Maybe this wasn't a waste of time after all. He doesn't have long to waste thinking about it, however. Just because he's behind Harriet, that doesn't mean he's out of their range, after all. He doesn't have time to screw around.
Drawing out the Doomcaliber Knight, he looks it over briefly with a strange smile before throwing it up into the air. The card shines bright as it rips the energy it needs from him, forming a gate between the worlds. Winds whip around it, a vortex of dark mist swirling wildly before dispersing as the ghostly knight hurtles out of it, galloping out to land with a crash of hooves upon the ground. The horse rears, kicks, and lunges forward, the riders heavy lance slicing out to strike the nearest monster that is actually a threat - a Shadow Ghoul.
Please. Like one of his monsters was going to view a Watapon as a threat.]
Hoh... that's interesting.
[Most monsters just disappeared when they were done, didn't they? The green light effect was pretty cool. 8/10 for show, 2/10 for effective monster usage, Dartz.]
just makin shit up but the wiki says leviathan supposedly wanted duel monster souls too so SHRUG
[Of course it's not a threat - but still, there's no sense in taking more damage from it. She'll step away from it, following her Elf toward the Mask of Shine and Dark and placing another facedown monster between them as an afterthought.
Of course, he might be surprised that it's facedown in attack position. Ah, DOTR mechanics.]
... It's strange, is what it is. Normally I'd expect it to be pulled into the circle, but this. - Ah, wait a tick!
[She concentrates, as though trying to sense something.]
There's no graveyard... somehow they've gone somewhere else.
...no graveyard? What the hell kind of bullshit is that?!
[Please, he was there in season one, he's seen enough weird dueling stuff that that doesn't phase him too much. He does find it weird, though. He follows her, sticking close behind her. She's his shield, after all. He is not getting far away from her.]
[The Mask is running away, so Harriet continues to advance as Bakura follows her, focused but able to answer anyway.]
See those giant eyes? They're my eyes. ...Not literally, of course, but I can see what they see. Quite good in a wider battlefield. But if you look into the one in the ground, you can see everyone's graveyards...
[So actually she was concentrating down, more specifically. But not now.]
Anyway, none of the enemy's cards are there. We must still have one, since your used cards haven't stopped working or anything- they haven't, yes? I can't imagine what advantage getting rid of it would have...
[She can see through those eyes? ...that's gotta be confusing. He snickers at her correction. If they were literally her eyes, he'd suspect she was an alien.]
They didn't become ghosts... so I guess the graveyard's still intact on our side. Ask me again if any of my monsters die.
[He holds back on the fact that he doesn't need a graveyard anyway. Using the cards as a portal between this world and the other world meant that his monsters could just go right back home when they got defeated. Malik knew about his methods, but how much she's figured out about them, he doesn't know. Probably nothing, unless Malik babbled during one of his drunken escapades with her.
Man-Eater Bug comes out next, and he watches with a twisted smile as it pounces on the Watapon when it ranges too close. The results are... unpleasant, to say the least. Aw, how cute. The little fuzzball didn't have organs. It's quickly sucked into the sky, a fact that is likely a blessing for the tiny fuzzball and an irritation to him. Spoiling his fun...]
Losing the graveyard would be useful in some situations. But not if they just get sucked away.
[They could have been copies of her real eyes or something! ...If they were orange. As for what she knows about Malik's summoning, it's not much, but she did know that he could summon monsters before she taught him, and even figured out how to use that to teach him war dueling more quickly. And also a lot more dangerously, but she wasn't really attached to him at the time...]
Mmm... We've just about cleaned these guys up. But I will if something else happens. I play the spell card Winged Trumpeter!
[A fairy in green plays a rousing battle song on its trumpet. With the annoying fluffy creature laid to rest, she can focus on the mask, shifting her newly-powered face down to help the Elf corner it. Because effects still apply to face-downs in War Duels. Good times.]
Well, I don't know where you monsters are going, but it's no longer your time to shine... Dark witch, attack!
[The face-down flips up to reveal the named monster, who is neither dark element nor a spellcaster, but its attack connects all the same. The mask is down, and with that, the area is clear of monsters!]
I doubt they'll stop attacking us because we won one battle. We'll get a chance to test it sooner or later.
[He watches with interest as her final attack connects. It's fascinating. The tingle of magic, so familiar and yet so different; the way the monsters feel, which is utterly strange; the ornate showiness of it. They're all things that are utterly different from the magic he knows, utterly unfitting and unnatural. What could have caused the evolution of such a thing? He doesn't know, but he likes it.]
They were ignoring me until you showed up, though!
[As she gives him a cheeky grin, the gold circles fade from the sky, but not from the ground. A white light shoots up from the eye that Bakura now knows represents the graveyard... and then the images of cards spin inside it, mystic reels. They mostly show an image of Fake Trap, but another card occasionally surfaces in the merry roulette. Harriet walks up to it as she regards his thanks.]
It's fine, don't mention it.
[But she'll be a bit distracted for a moment as she tries to grab the one useful card out of this sea of shitty fakes. Man, it sucks that the enemy doesn't have a graveyard... she totally got robbed, here.]
[That's the weirdest thing he's ever seen, and he's spent three thousand years in a necklace. He reaches out to try to touch it curiously, but his fingers only meet air. Is it only real for her? That's a pain. Oh well, there's nothing useful in it anyway. One card he doesn't recognize and a bunch of Fake Traps...]
Because there's nothing in the graveyard. Sometimes I get a full array of the cards I defeated... but if I mostly attacked the duelist directly, it'd show up like this.... just fake traps and the deck leader. So that spell card must be what the reels determined was the enemy's deck leader. But it's usually a monster...
[Weird, very weird. She messes up the first time and gets a fake trap, but the second and third times she manages to grab the spell. Three cards appear in her hand. One is the fake trap, and the other two...]
[He takes it, tilting his head a little as he looks it over. This card... something about it feels wrong. It's not like any card he's ever felt before. The God Cards felt weird, but that was their ancient magic... why would a regular spell card do that?
Then again, regular spell cards don't have riddles on them.]
A great power...?
[It sounds like it'd be a gamble to even try to use it... since they don't know the effect, or what it wants them to tribute. The Ring chimes faintly and he closes his eyes for a moment, trying to feel out what he can from it. It's no good. Whatever magic it draws from, it isn't the same root as his own. Whatever that root is, he doesn't know. It's too far away for him to even sense it.]
How should I know? It could mean anything. Unlocking potential, maybe, or drawing on the wielder's power if they have any.
[He's tempted to just play it and see what it does. It's quite a fascinating little mystery, and he doesn't want a repeat of the Ra incident if he has to rely on it.
...huh. Actually...]
Maybe it means that you have to be strong in order to get it? I don't think it counted on your magic slot games, so it could be that normally, it was hard to reach.
...If it's a card that only the strong can obtain then there'd have to be something magic going on either way.
[Even the god cards were steal-able, after all... Malik's memories showed that. It's kind of weird to think of because of that, but it's not impossible. Since, yeah, she literally just did it herself with the magic slots.]
I am now. [She wasn't unique back in time, but...]
Actually, in this day and age, being able to do magic at all should be unique, correct? Then if that theory were true, this card doesn't make any sense unless it's also ancient.
...you're right. Magic in this age is all but dead.
[Tucking his hands into his pockets, he looks over at her with a thoughtful air. That's a good point. If it's this powerful, it's gotta be old.]
The magic in this thing isn't the same as mine. I don't know if it's the same as the God Cards without comparing them, but I'd doubt it. I don't know anyone who's capable of this kind of thing, though.
[Maybe he should take some time out to pay a little visit to Pegasus and ask him...
Though he feels like there was something else he was meant to be doing.]
[...that guy's probably dead by now. Some rescue mission. The fact that that's his fault doesn't matter to him at all.]
Later, then!
[While the coast is clear, he's just going to run home. He doesn't know how long she'll be gone, but it'll give him time to check out her DVD collection, look around for a diary, glance at the contents of her dresser and then flop down on her couch for a quick nap before she returns.
Diorama? Protecting the place? Meh. He can do that later.]
[Don't just kill off her friends, how rude! He could be fighting off watapons with a golf club, you don't know.
Harriet's taste in DVDs is what he might expect from the stuff she'd make them watch in the Campus; highly varied, and kind of shitty. There's some romantic movies that might come as a bit of a surprise - she'd watch a lot of films with those two, but not that... Other than that, there's no diary, but a planner (have fun stalking? or not, since monster apocalypses tend to throw plans out of the window. There's a duel tournament that might be worth looking into, maybe.) As for the dresser.... well if he was looking for panties, congrats. On top of it, there's a few of the porcelain dolls she mentioned - decoration but probably not the full collection. Overall, the state of the dorm does nothing more than to suggest before everything happened, she was pretty normal. It may seem too small for her life now.
An hour later, she returns, more weary than before and ready to sink into her couch, but Bakura's already there. Honestly, wasn't he supposed to be working on something? Or at least holding the fort, as he'd said? Dummy.
Well, it's not that surprising, anyway. She'll put a kettle on instead. It can be almost as relaxing, and the whistle will probably annoy him awake.]
[Ironically, the dolls interest him more than the panties, though he definitely checks those out to see what her style is. She looks like the type to wear cute panties, and he can't go by their experiences with Malik because he didn't get a good enough look then.
Her lack of a diary bugs him more. How is he meant to invade her privacy without a diary? The duel tournament is an interesting thing to learn about, though.
The whistle rouses him from his sleep and he lifts his head with a groan. What the hell is that? Getting up, he goes to investigate, and scowls at her as he realizes what it is.]
Don't you have any respect for peoples' need to sleep?
